The start of a new financial year is an excellent time to reflect on this and, instead of ending up potentially stressed and exhausted like you might have been this time last year, commit to a year of focussing on taking care of your team so that they can take care of your business.

It can be easy to confuse having a team of people you like with having a team of people who have the skills and ability to take your business where you want it to go.

• You would see a high performing team which is effectively and efficiently taking caring of the needs of all clients, releasing you of the need to do so
• There would be daily evidence of the culture you want cultivate which would be evident in proactive behaviours and performance results
• There would be internal transparency and your team would know exactly what results you expect to be delivered, consistently working towards the overall alignment of the businesses goals
• You would have the assurance of having the right people with the relevant skills doing the job efficiently whenever required

But most importantly, this would result in you only working on what you truly love to do in your business.

Steps for setting your team up for success:

1. Understand what each individual’s highest priorities are and what ‘success’ looks like for every team member.
2. Ensure everyone within your team has success goals which are aligned to their highest priorities.
3. Actively encourage your employees to ask themselves, “Are my actions bringing me towards my highest priority goals?” every day.
4. Acknowledge that your team members, like you, may have to have some focus on things that aren’t their highest life priorities. It’s important to remember that while their job may not be their highest priority, you can help employees to understand how their job might help them achieve their goals and live to their highest priorities.
5. Stop expecting individual members of your team to be and do the same as you, or to have the same priorities as you.
6. Ensure you and each of your employees know exactly what is expected and how performance is going to be measured overall.
7. Give your team the development they need to achieve their job.
8. Ask each individual what their future job progression goals are and enable them to get the development they need, either by acting in roles, or facilitating coaching, mentoring or other development.
9. Always remember to ask yourself, “What did I do to help my team fulfil their most purposeful, meaningful, productive and profitable best today?”.
